President's Letter

In the last Bulletin editorial Horst Nemec expressed a hope - the next president would provide some introductory notes for each issue in the same humorous and sometimes cryptic manner as Jean-François Germond had done in this position. This will be difficult to achieve ! Luckily for this first attempt I'm in the position to say a few very non-cryptic words : words of thanks to the retiring board members - and a "welcome" to the newly elected ones.

Pascal Schweizer deserves to be mentioned first : he had served our society on the board for 20 (twenty) years - this included two terms as president (1983-1987) and an extended period as treasurer (1991-1999) - certainly an extraordinary career of dedication to SSRMP ! He was also involved in several of our annual meetings, both as organiser and entertainer (see later in this issue).

Another board member with "presidential experience" is Christian Michel : he joined the board in 1991 - and started out as president (until 1995). So the two biologists on the board step down, to be replaced by Nigel Crompton.

Alfred Willi had represented the medical views during the board meetings in his co-operative manner since 1993. He now hands this over to Philippe Coucke, who will certainly also guarantee that radiation biology is represented well in this gremium.

Léon André had been secretary since 1995, supported by Silvia Kleiner. She'll stay in this important function, with the secretariat moving back to Inselspital : Roberto Mini has taken over - not really a newcomer, as he had been on the board previously (1983-1987).

Fortunately (for SSRMP and for the new president) several other board members continue. Jean-François Germond will act as past president, and Regina Seiler will accept the responsibility for our finances. And there is Horst Nemec, the Bulletin editor (1993-1999) : the Bulletin plays an important role for the communication within our society, and Horst has done a great job here; he'll continue on the board - but wants to hand over the Bulletin : your applications are invited !

Let's look into the future : 4 of the 7 board members are or have been on the SASRO board as well. This will foster co-operation with SASRO, but some more formal arrangement is still desirable : SASRO (to be more accurate : SRO) is facing the need to organise courses and exams to fulfil the FMH requirements; physics (and biology) inputs are required here - and this should preferentially be organised by SSRMP. Another partner organisation is SGBT: Zürich saw a successful combined annual congress; there are other areas where goals may be more effectively reached together - this will have to be investigated.

Equally important is communication within our society ! Were you surprised to see a "president's letter" written in English ? English may be a tool to overcome the language barrier : it works with other societies (like SASRO and SGBT), and has partially been tried within SSRMP before. How do you feel about this ? Let's combine this issue with another tool for improved communication - e-mail : post your opinion to the mailing list. Or would you prefer to contact just me ? You are always welcome at
